Although there are many things which can affect your dog’s anxiety, changes to their diet may not be a resolution. However, there are dietary nutrients and characteristics of food which can be considered to aid dog anxiety. We recommend complete and balanced nutrition, including plenty of fibre to support gut health and the microbiome. Omega-3 is also a potent ingredient which can help to soothe inflamed areas.
Looking out for any other functional ingredients is also recommended – keep an eye out for ingredients which have a demonstrable effect on calming and soothing may also provide some relief to your dog’s anxious tendencies.
As well as a healthy diet, many veterinarians would recommend behavioural training such as positive reinforcement, and managing your dog’s environment by creating a safe space. Some supplements can help to target anxious dogs, such as our natural calming supplement.
“There are many causes of stress and anxiety in dogs, and like so many things, a multifactorial approach has the greatest impact. Nutritional changes to aid your dog’s anxiety can be massively beneficial, but used alone without changes to the environment or behavioural training, the pattern of an anxiety reaction can continue.
I’d combine a calming supplement with behavioural training. Incorporate calming activities such as search games and food enrichment activities.” – Laura Ward, director and pet nutritionist.
We recommend that calming dog food is used alongside behaviour training. As well as their mental health and anxiety, each dog finds different things stressful, so providing a designated time frame is not always possible. After consistently feeding your dog our natural calming dog food, you can expect to see a difference after around three months. This allows the nutrients to be utilised by your dog’s body, and we would expect that calmer behaviour may be seen within this time.
