Wondering ‘Can dogs eat apples?’ There’s probably been a few times you’ve been snacking on an apple and noticed your dog’s wandering eyes, secretly hoping for a piece.

The good news is that dogs can eat apples, and we even include them in our natural dry dog food here at Green Pantry. In this blog, we’ll tell you all about the health benefits of apples and just how much and how often your dog can munch on them.

Can dogs eat apples?

Yes, dogs can eat apples, as long as you remove the core and seeds first. Apples are known to be rich in fibre, vitamin C and antioxidants such as quercetin, all playing a beneficial role in their diet. However, it’s important to understand what parts of apples are truly safe for your pup.

You can feed your dog: Ripe apple flesh and skin, in moderation

You must not feed your dog: The core and seeds, raw cooking apples, or anything baked and sweetened

Make sure you wash your apple thoroughly before feeding it to your dog, and remove the core and all seeds.

What are the health benefits of apples for dogs?

Here at Green Pantry, we’re more than happy to use apples in some of our delicious recipes, and that’s thanks to their nutritious properties. We use them as a controlled inclusion in some of our recipes, along with other 100% natural ingredients.

Here’s why we like to use apples in our Green Pantry recipes:

  • They are rich in fibre, sweet, crunchy, and low in calories. For this reason, pieces of apple can make a tasty treat, acting as a good way for your dog to lose weight
  • They contain vitamin C and potassium, which support the immune system and the health of the heart.
  • They contain pectin, which steadies digestion and nutrient absorption. Fibres from apples also support the gut microbiome.

Dogs eating apples: FAQs

Can dogs eat apples with skin?

Yes, dogs can safely eat apples with the skin on – just make sure you’ve washed it thoroughly! Apple peel actually contains extra fibre, which is helpful for digestion. It contains vitamin C, as well as other antioxidants. Remember to remove any dirt or chemicals before sharing, and feed in moderation.

Can dogs eat crab apples?

No, dogs cannot eat crab apples. This is because their seeds, stems, and leaves contain chemical compounds that turn into cyanide and, when digested, can lead to serious problems such as breathing problems, seizures, or much worse. Small crab apples can also pose a choking hazard, so avoid them where possible.

Can dogs eat green apples?

Yes, dogs can safely eat green apples, including Granny Smiths and other varieties. Don’t overfeed your dog any form of apple, as it will cause upset digestion. Just make sure you’re cutting the apple into small, manageable pieces and removing the seeds and core, as these can contain traces of cyanide.
